EU scrutiny of TikTok and Meta over crisis misinformation raises stakes for verified information

EU criticism of Meta and TikTok over Ceuta disinformation signals closer scrutiny of platforms that many Christian organisations also use to reach audiences on migration and humanitarian issues.

EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen has criticised Meta and TikTok for how they handled disinformation during the recent migration crisis at Ceuta, where rumours spread on social platforms reportedly suggested the border was open. Brussels now plans tighter monitoring of major platforms during crises and closer cooperation with fact checkers. For Christian media organisations, many of which rely on the same platforms to reach audiences and report on humanitarian and migration issues, the episode is a reminder that platform moderation decisions shape what information about vulnerable populations circulates and how reliably. Increased regulatory scrutiny of these platforms could also affect how religious and humanitarian content is treated under future moderation and fact checking rules.
