AI bots scrape European sites harder, a pattern that touches Christian publishers too

A report finds AI bots scrape European sites, including in non-English languages, more heavily than North American ones, a pattern relevant to Christian publishers across Europe.

A report from TollBit finds that European publishers face heavier AI bot scraping than North American sites, fewer referrals in return, and more frequent disregard of robots.txt instructions. The scrape-to-referral ratio worsened from 150 to 1 in the first quarter of 2026 to 227 to 1 in the second. Researchers point to the growing demand for non-English content among AI systems as a likely factor. Christian publishers operating in European languages, including denominational news sites, devotional platforms and church magazines, sit within this same environment, where content is drawn into AI training or answer systems without traffic or attribution returning to the source. The finding raises a practical question for any Christian media organisation publishing in a European language: how much of its content is being used elsewhere with little benefit coming back.
